Why Buy Cheap Travel Health Insurance?

On a recent trip to Las Vegas, I was stricken with Norovirus. Norovirus is most commonly known as a virus that spreads through a hotel, a resort, or most commonly a cruise ship at breakneck speed. It makes people tremendously ill and can even cause death.

I was staying in a hotel and felt a “case of the flu”, come on over about an hour’s period. I went downstairs to buy some Pepto Bismol to calm my stomach, only to find myself passed out in an elevator, having broken my nose on the way down to the floor!

This is a true story! Because of the Norovirus and my broken nose, I missed my flight out of Vegas and had to spend two extra nights in my hotel room at a hefty price. This little case of the flu cost me almost $1,000 and two extra days off of work.

Had I bought some form of cheap travel health insurance before I left town, I wouldn’t have been out that kind of money and I also would have been able to visit a doctor, or at least call for the hotel’s doctor.

As a result of not having health insurance, I suffered alone in my room while the town partied below me in the casino.

A case of the flu isn’t the only reason why you should buy cheap travel health insurance. If you have a trip planned and need to cancel it because of your health or the health of a family member, travel insurance will allow you to recoup the costs that are charged by the airline to change your flights.

Most airlines will now no longer change your flights without a significant fee attached to your new ticket, so insurance is a great way to get around this problem.

Another reason why cheap travel health insurance is a great idea for people travelling abroad is that your medical insurance may not cover you once you leave the country, and once you become ill or injured in another country, cheap travel health insurance will enable you to be seen by a doctor or taken into a hospital at little or no charge.

The cost of this kind of insurance is absolutely minimal in relation to the amount of money it could save you if the worst thing happens – like it did to me. Get covered before you go and you won’t find yourself stranded with no one to turn to.
